Since nobody is saying it I will... Media training / PR / marketing / comms are traditionally female-coded skills. There has been a marked deprioritization of this type of work within AI and it is costing them dearly now.
I've been in tech for almost 20 years and this industry has never felt so overwhelmingly male-coded. By that, I don't necessarily mean the genders of the people working in it. It's more the type of work that gets valued, the perspectives that bubble up to the surface, the tone of the language that gets used around it, etc...
But also I do mean it literally. There is such a lack of female voices in this space. Yes, there is Daniela (who I used to work with at Stripe). But how often do people talk about her?
To me the absence is very loud. It's like a gong getting struck in my face every day. Surely there are hundreds of women in this space who have interesting things to say. Where are they?
If you want to generate more Jacob Coxons, in the sense of being heard by the public and the media, you need to understand the value of "soft skills."
